Jessica has hit some huge milestones in the last 2.5 years!

When you have a client for a while, you think they might stop achieving but not at Get A Grip and certainly NOT Jessica! You will read her accomplishments below but I do want to say, she continues to impress me and I love to watch her get out of her comfort zone. Like it or not, she puts in 150% into the workouts. She has built a great group of friends and you’ll see through her spotlight her flare of sarcasm. It wouldn’t be her story without it.

She truly is amazing and I am SO looking forward to her 5K (I must be there) as that will by far be her biggest accomplishment this first half of the year! For someone who hates exercise and says she stops everything, she sure does kid us! 9am Class and Get A Grip would NOT be the same without her!

Jessica is also a big fan of spreading the word about our Get A Grip Family, which I would like to thank her. But, the true blessing in that is she too, plays a BIG part of helping someone change their life and for that there is nothing better!

Here is her story…

Jessica H 266x300 Spotlight Sunday...Jessica Herndon! Huge Milestones and More to Come!

The best way to explain how Carrie’s boot camp has affected my life is to simply list my fitness accomplishments before and after joining Get a Grip Total Fitness.

My nutrition/fitness goals accomplished BEFORE boot camp (birth-2008):

*Nada. Nothing. Zilch. Niente. Niets.

My nutrition/fitness goals accomplished AFTER boot camp (2009-present):

*Attended a grueling boot camp three times each week. (Grueling is an understatement.)

*Completed “Spartan 1000” in 1:32:50 without dying. (I looked like death but I did it!)

*Ran Miles for Moffitt (one mile) event. (I still believe you should only run if the cops are chasing you.)

*Lost 50+ inches of body fat from my neck to my ankles while increasing my lean muscle mass. (Including losing  “parts” I thought were permanent like the ‘tank top overlap of skin’—LOST IT!)

*Completed the 21-day Belly Blast Challenge and lost 3+ inches in my waist. (I still don’t believe water is a “snack” but I learned so much more from the challenge than I thought!)

*Tried classes/workshop that I NEVER thought I would show my face in: kettlebell, nutrition planning, grocery store tours, TRX, yoga, hard core abs, etc.

*Completed home workouts while on vacation!!! (I am usually sitting on my butt, drinking a glass of wine and eating foods that are not nutritious.)

*Found inspiration and accountability in other campers and hopefully offered the same to them. (I know if I miss a class with the excuse “I just didn’t feel like going”, the girls will be all over my Facebook wall tormenting me!)

*Learned positive eating habits and that one day “off the wagon” doesn’t have to be an entire month. J

My nutrition/fitness goals for 2012:

*Run a 5K and finish!

*Continue to attend boot camp three times each week.

*Cross train two other days each week with either yoga or running.

*Continue to make better food choices with NO “diets”.

*Push myself to try things I would normally not do if there was a gun to my head (see “Run a 5K”).

This may all sound ridiculous and exaggerated but I promise you if I can do these things, anyone can do them. I have never had a single shred of athleticism or coordination in my body and, yet, I accomplished all these physical goals.

The way I explain boot camp (our cult) to potential members is that it’s fail-proof. Carrie gives you ALL the tools you need to succeed so the only way you can fail is if you simply don’t show up or talk yourself out of trying. Those who know me all thought I would quit this “fad” like I did a million others in the past. I’m not exactly known for sticking with my exercise regimen. J But, I can proudly say that after two and a half years in boot camp, I don’t plan on quitting for anything or anyone.

When Eileen came to me I knew she was a keeper. When you’re in my profession you really get excited when people come to you when they are truly READY! Eileen was ready! 200% every workout, never complains (at least loud enough for me to hear), encourage others, smiling always, and best of all she doesn’t use her limitations as an EXCUSE!

She has 2 bad knees, as you’ll read below, but NEVER complains and is always looking to me to give her some exercise she can substitute. Her determination is off the charts and she inspires others by her inability to give up! She is a staple to the Brandon camp and it wouldn’t be the same without her.

Here is her story…

Peer pressure can be a great motivator.  It was almost two years ago when I gave in.

My 50th birthday was fast approaching and several of my childhood friends decided to celebrate our milestone year on a cruise.  Getting into shape became a priority for obvious reasons.  50 at 50 was the battle cry.

Groupon was a new concept and one that actually brought Carrie and I together.  Looking to break the routine of a conventional gym – which I had utilized for several years with modest results – I came across a Groupon for Carrie’s bootcamp and along with my daughter and a friend, decided to give it a try.  My workouts needed a boost and with the incentive of the cruise hovering in the future, I decided to give bootcamp a one-month trial.

The first month went well, and despite some general muscle soreness, I felt better.  The second month was an easy decision, as have each of the next 20-plus months.  I am now fully addicted to the Monday, Wednesday, Friday routine.  The workouts have become essential to my overall physical well being and have contributed to my improved self esteem.

The variety of workouts, from kettlebells to card games to dirty dozen, keeps the program challenging and refreshing. Carrie also takes in my personal physical condition and adapts the workouts to fit my needs. Two knee surgeries and arthritis have limited some of my ability to do certain exercises but Carrie always finds a way to modify the workout to fit my abilities.  Her unwavering encouragement and support, along with the great friendships I’ve established with my boot camp family, makes answering the early morning wake-up call much easier.

After almost two years, I can honestly say that Carrie’s boot camp has changed my life in an extremely positive manner.  I reached my goal of losing 50 pounds in time for the “50th cruise”, but more importantly, I have adopted a healthier lifestyle because of the commitment to this program.

Congrats Eileen for ALL your improvements and commitment to a healthy lifestyle, you’re amazing!!!

Did I mention I love these Spotlights?

I have the most amazing people who attend my camps and studio!

Lori O’Brien is one of them for sure. She has been with me since South Tampa Boot Camp started. She is what I call one of my “staples.” I can always count on her to be there and helping me remember when and who is on vacation and etc. (Her and Leaza are great for that).

I asked Lori a couple times if she would like to be featured for all she has accomplished and she just now gave in. She is very modest. But, she also needs to be very proud for all she has accomplished. As you’ll read below she has some great improvements (she forgot to mention her running, too). For all she has went through in the last year, I applaud her commitment to herself and her health. She is a great role model for her kids. Not to forget to mention, most people would have quit exercising and use the setbacks in their life as an excuse, not Lori she has shown us that it is just as important to take care of yourself no matter what happens. Thanks Lori!

Here is her story…

I can't believe it's already been 1yr and 9 months since I started the South Tampa boot camp!!

Here's a little background about me.  I've always tried to stay active and exercise in some way through out my life.  I played softball and soccer early on as a child.  Then I joined a swim team at 10 years old and competed through my senior year in high school.  At 22, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis so I felt like it was extra important to maintain an exercise routine.  But there were challenging times especially when my mom had to watch me slide down the stairs on my butt because my ankles hurt too much to walk down…and I was only in my mid-20's.  But I still pushed through and did cardio and weight machines as much as I could especially during 'good' times.  I've tried many things to manage the RA throughout the years from conventional anti-inflammatory medication to alternative methods including rotation diet (food sensitivities), acupuncture, and natural supplements.  Back when I was diagnosed with RA, I was scared what my life would look like 20 years later,  but I am extremely lucky that I am currently pain-free from the RA which allows me to participate in camp to my fullest potential!

My boot camp story starts with the groupon I saw in Feb 2010.  It sounded good….kettlebell…what's that?  So I had to do some research.  It took me most of the day to finally decide to purchase the groupon….really??  And it was only $39 for the month…geez, should have been a no-brainer!  Anyway, I wanted to start right away since my family was going on a cruise in April.  My thought was maybe I would look a little better by then.  I felt like I had a few extra pounds to lose and had been working out at the YMCA for years.  My body had gotten used to the exercises I was doing, so I wasn't making much progress there.  I was nervous the first day I showed up to camp but it didn't take long to feel 'at home'.  I will never forget that first week when I dreaded the stairs in my home among other things.  I never thought I could be so sore everywhere!!  I was hooked and felt like I was getting stronger over the months.  I began to realize it once Carrie 'made' me start doing my pushups on my toes instead of my knees….are you sure I can do that??  Of course, I could and I did!!  I've also worked up to using one of the heavier KB's that Carrie sets aside for me icon wink Spotlight Sunday...Lori OBrien! She Doesnt Fall to Any Excuses!   Another confirmation that camp was working for me came about 9 months after starting when I went for my yearly physical.  In the past I've usually had a decent HDL (good cholesterol) level that remained in the upper 60's but at that visit it had jumped to 97!!!!  Wow I couldn't believe it!  The Dr asked what I was doing and said continue it….and I did.  I definitely make it my priority and hardly ever miss a class and have even gone to some 6am classes in Brandon instead so that I would still get my workout.

I have 2 wonderful kids, a son Liam (12) and a daughter Aedin (9).  This last year has been challenging for all of us to say the least.  Our family moved out of our 'dream home' because it was built with toxic Chinese drywall.  Shortly after that, Aedin was diagnosed with celiac disease (autoimmune disease that damages the small intestine when she eats gluten), so we had to learn how to go gluten-free.  And now I am in the middle of a divorce and trying to figure out our 'new life'.  I feel that boot camp has really helped me cope throughout these stressful times and it's comforting to know that it is one thing that is stable in my life.  Thanks Carrie, I couldn't have come this far without you!! icon smile Spotlight Sunday...Lori OBrien! Our Spotlight is our Brandon veteran Andy Kilroy!

I’ll never forget the first day he came to camp. I don’t think he knew what his wife Heather got him into. He was a trooper, but I know it was tough on him. I have to say, I wasn’t sure he was going to come back.

Now, it is almost 2 years for him. Crazy! He always gives 100% at camp and his humor entertains us all. I always smile when I pull into the parking lot and see his car there waiting. He is one of the few men that sticked it out. I’m VERY proud of him and his commitment to himself and the class. Everyone loves Andy! He has leaned out  and has had several GREAT improvements thoughout! My favorite is watching him sprint during the laps, he is determined to kill himself; he’s moving so fast! He has been very committed to attend each boot camp he can whether he wants to be there or not. Camp wouldn’t be the same without him (so hurry back from your work opportunity)!

Here is his story…

I'd been 'in shape' before. During a few magical months back in mid-1998 I was a stallion. I was a student at LSU and religiously worked out at the student recreational center daily for at least 2 hours. Now technically what I was wouldn't be considered, 'in good shape'. I lifted weights and stretched a little. I LOOKED like I was in great shape. If I had to swim across a pool for a million dollars I'd be dead because I didn't have any body fat to help me float and I didn't have enough endurance to swim across my tub at home much less a pool. One day I looked into a mirror and thought to myself, 'this body is unmaintainable'.

For the next 13 years I marched down a steady road of bodily neglect and abuse. I yoyo'd in between months of living off of solely garlic bread and pizza bites and beer then dieting unhealthily. I'd played golf my whole life. It’s certainly a good stretching exercise, and walking is always nice. But let's face it; golfers are about one step up from cardiac stint filled professional bowlers with fingers slippery from cheese pretzels and large chunks of deli meats stuffed with olives.

I started going to boot camp the way many other men did. My wife is the local representative for the women's eternal movement to lose weight that doesn't exist. I of course am the devoted husband who manned and said, 'oh yeah honey… I'll go to that boot camp with you'. I said this mostly because I thought the shock of it to her system would snap her back into coherence and she'd be too catatonic to remember going later.

My first impressions were that this semi-circle of people was going to be about stretching, doing calisthenics and even pushing ourselves to try even (parish the though) some weight training. By the end of the first class I'd not only fallen on my ass (during the warm up mind you) but started to see small parts of my life flash before my eyes. I'd also seriously started to think my wife didn't try to stop me from coming because she knew it'd be a good way to collect on my life insurance. Plenty of witnesses in class make the questioning easy on the widow. I came to think for a moment that the muscular black man standing to the teacher's left was not just a student but her bodyguard. If I hadn't been on my knees half the class begging for the sweet release of death I imagined I could have mustered the strength to launch myself at her neck.

That first day I knew that no matter how much my body ached I had to keep going back to that class. Getting yourself in shape is more than just a promise you make to yourself to fit into a rack of pants that you've never worn but keep because you're too lazy to give them to goodwill. You not only have to want it but in the case of all the people in that class you know that what it does for you is worth more than the pain you experience. Carrie has not only shown me what I can do with my body but that you don't need to have someone in your face yelling at you for you to get it done. Now some people do need that. I don't need that and neither do the people in my class. What we like is to have a sweet dispositioned blond girl telling us things to do which we know our bodies are going to hate us for later. I'm not Freud but even I know if she came to class with a spiked leather collar on no one would even flinch.

Since starting Carrie's classes I've come to appreciate not only hard physical work for my body but I've really seen the results that commitment to yourself can yield. That's how she's turned me from a fat lazy slob into the muscle bound freak you see before you. Unfortunately I'm leaving camp because of a huge work opportunity in a faraway land called Kansas. The thing I worry about most is finding an acceptable substitute for the three hours a week I look forward to and dread the most. I don't think I'll ever be able to find a comparable class. Carrie is the best and after my wife and kitties I'm going to miss class the most.

Kevin was like most men, stop at a gas station to pick up a can of soda and food (or what they consider food to be). He came to me with his fiance Katie, and I really thought he was just there for her. But, he wanted to make some changes, too! No one would have ever said Kevin was out of shape, he looked great.

The first re-assessment Kevin blew it away, he lost a ton of inches and even weight. We thought he looked great before, but you could really tell he is more lean and looked healthier, too. One thing about Kevin is when you tell him to do something, he does. Most people do not take action, but that's NOT Kevin! I was SO proud of him.

To top it off, he continues to THIS day to maintain and even improve his health and fitness. His commitment and dedication does not get overlooked; it is highly commendable. He is young and has already learned how important a healthy lifestyle is to his life!

I really enjoy having him as a part of Get A Grip and as MY running partner! Keep it up Kev!

Here is his story…

I had always considered myself to be in somewhat good shape.  As a kid, I was very physically active.  I was a competitive gymnast for many years as a teen, so exercise was a very important part of my life.  That habit had stuck with me for the most part through my mid-twenties.  However, eventually I became less concerned about my diet and would eat whatever I craved.  I figured at least a little exercise here and there would be enough to stay ‘healthy’.

That mindset didn’t last too long.  My fiancé (Katie) and I were in our friends’ wedding about 2 years ago.  After seeing one of the pictures of myself from the event, I knew it was time to change a few things.  That’s where Carrie came in.  Katie and I met with her, and she gave us workouts and meal plans.  The biggest issue for me was cutting out soda and white breads.  After all, my lunch break every day consisted of going to a gas station, getting a soda, and seeing what was available to eat.  I knew it wasn’t healthy, but I was addicted, and it was convenient.

As hard as it was to go through the withdrawal of sugar and caffeine, it worked.  With the addition of healthier foods, I immediately lost the extra weight I had gained over the past few years.  On top of that, the workouts were equally effective.  I’ve changed my diet and no longer want to visit those gas stations for food!

Since Carrie opened her Lutz studio, I now attend yoga and run club each week, and love participating in both.  Carrie’s constant positive attitude, high expectations, and accountability have transformed my mindset to be healthier.

My highlights are running several 5ks, as well as completing the Spartan 1000 Challenge multiple times.

I now consider visiting her studio a highlight of each week.  I love the way I feel and have no desire to go back to my old bad habits.
