Leda has done an amazing job! She has leaned out a ton and is stronger than ever! She is a machine! I was SO happy when Tammy (thanks, Tammy) brought her to our Lutz Boot camp. Leda had a ton of sponk and I knew she would fit right in. I could listen to her talk all day long also, with her accent.

She always give it 100%! I am looking forward to seeing what is next for her as she will surprise us!

Here is her story…

I was always a very active person. I walked, run, played sports, etc.  My lifestyle changed. I didn’t exercise much, gained some weight and I made no effort to change anything. I had a treadmill at home, but I was unable to stay motivated. Every single day I said to myself I will use the treadmill today and every single day I found an excuse not to.

My best friend, Tammy Thornhill, kept inviting me to join her at Get A Grip. One Saturday she took me with her to Carrie’s place (this is how I like to call it). It was hard, but also fun and a very interesting workout, so I thought I would give it a try. Once I decided to fully commit to the Get A Grip, I really went for it.

Over the last 15 months I changed my eating habits and I worked out consistently. My weight steadily decreased, my clothes were feeling looser, I had a lot more energy, I developed some muscles, hurray!!!

I felt better than ever. Exercising made me feel good and confident, which is extremely powerful. And I couldn’t do all this alone. There are so many people I would like to thank, starting with Tammy for introducing me at GAG; Carrie, for being such a great coach and motivator – You are really inspiring Carrie – thank you; my husband John, who is my greatest supporter and biggest fan; our GAG team and especially the 7 o’clock back corner “bundle of joy”. You guys rock. Thank you for pushing me to achieve more and more each time.

I look forward to more challenges and fun at GAG.

We look forward to them, too! Thanks, Leda!

So Proud of YOU!

Michele is one amazing lady! When I first meet her, I know she would become part of the Get a Grip Family in the Lutz location. She fit right in and worked hard. She mingled well with the gang and even had a little humor to go along with her. Within two weeks of starting boot camp I could already see her strength increase and her body composition changing. Hard work does pay off, and it does for her. She now needs a belt for her jeans (sorry, I couldn’t resist – well I could of). We all just love our mother hen. She even has her own little group inside our group that she has turned into addicted runners. They meet earlier at the Lutz Studio and run BEFORE boot camp.

It’s ok though, because she is unable to say NO to us and we can talk her into most anything. She caves to our peep pressure (which we secretly love). We are looking forward to seeing what else we can talk her into in the future. She is a gem!

Here is her story…

So, in case you don’t know me, I’m the quiet one in the front corner.  My story goes like this…

After years of supporting my kids in soccer and dance, fast food became the way of life and of course I began to gain weight, even though I was always athletic playing soccer and doing a little running. By 2007 I was my heaviest ever. With my son graduating high school I had a realization that I needed to do something, so I lost 50 lbs counting points, began running more, had some 5k success and played in a ladies soccer league. Then fast forward to my 2011 New Years Eve party, a little tequila and next thing you know I am committing to my first half marathon – Gasparilla 2012. I was so proud to complete it, but even though I was running more than ever I began gaining weight and my running times were getting slower.

At the same time my personal life was in a state of change as well. My Father-in-law has terminal liver cancer and in September 2012 my husband moved in with him to provide around the clock care, my daughter left for her freshman year of college, and I was living alone for the first time in my life, empty nest…for real!

Finally I realized I needed something to change my focus, something I could control. I always wanted a ‘gym buddy’, I found regular gym classes boring, and ultimately I had no motivation. Although I still enjoyed running with friends, I had become frustrated with slower times due to my lack of resistance training. So as the good computer geek that I am, I researched local personal trainers, Crossfit, and other local bootcamps, but then I found Get a Grip Total Fitness. One phone call to Carrie and I knew I had to give it a try! Nervous that first class, I quickly knew I loved it! I lost weight, gained muscle as well as friends! I love seeing the encouragement between members, teamwork during Spartan, and especially Carrie dancing icon wink Spotlight Sunday...Michele Musto! She Caves to Get a Grips Peer Pressure! Since joining in September my running has improved tremendously with 5k times I haven’t seen since 2009. I have completed two more half marathons and 3 Spartans. Influenced by ‘peer pressure’ this year I am planning two more half marathons, a duathlon and the Ragnar Relay. Most importantly, my motto is ‘running is cheaper than therapy’ and Get a Grip has kept me sane! When I am tired, unmotivated, depressed or frustrated at work…I am always one bootcamp away from a better attitude.

My 2013 word is ‘Discover’…and it is amazing what I have already ‘Discovered’ about myself. Carrie and Get a Grip are stuck with me, and I am only beginning to ‘Discover’ what I can achieve!

Amy is no exception to the rule of someone how has done an amazing transformation both inside and out. She gives every workout 200%! As you will read below she has done SO MUCH in just under a year and things she never thought she would do. I couldn’t be more proud of her! She is great girl and I look forward to her smiley face every boot camp session she attends. She has had many accomplishments/milestones in just under a year. Who knows where her craziness will take her, but I do know she will be seeked out for more new and fun adventures. hint-hint!! READ her story (Congrats, Amy!)

Here it is…
Groupon! That is how I “found” Carrie! I had just signed up with Groupon and one of the first “notices” I received from them was a 21 day belly blast groupon with Get a Grip Fitness. 21 days? I can do that….easy! So I signed up (along with my boyfriend) and have been SO thankful ever since! My story is no different from many. After years of being able to “run off” a few extra pounds, it seemed that now I was in my 30s, it was harder and harder to lose weight or tone up. I tried everything…P90X, Insanity, Ellipticals, Treadmills, etc. and nothing REALLY worked. And I am not a gym rat. I don’t like being stuck on pieces of equipment (I blame it on adult ADD)! I needed something challenging and something accountable. Working out at home was too easy for me to “put off”.   So I bought the groupon and thought…perfect….21 days and I’m done….WRONG. I got hooked! 21 days turned into 3 more months that turned into almost a year later and I love it! Carrie is such an amazing person! She has made so many things “click” for me. The first 21 days were an eye opener. I thought, “I’ve gotten through P90X & Insanity so this should be easy….WRONG again!   Her workouts are killer! I was sore in places I have never been before and I loved it! I followed the 21 days and lost 6 pounds and more importantly INCHES. It wasn’t just her workouts either it was the meal plans. I was eating what I thought was “healthy” and I was WRONG AGAIN. No wonder I couldn’t tone up…I was eating lite this, fiber one that, Special K snacks….GROSS!   During the 21 days, I took one of Carrie’s nutrition classes and it all sank in. It’s not just the exercise….it’s what you’re putting into your body!   Now I love my green smoothies and am addicted to Gogi Berries and Spinach!

What I love most about Get a Grip is the atmosphere. I have met so many wonderful people that I call friends! My “back corner” group keeps me accountable and pushes me farther than I’ve ever pushed myself before. I would not be where I’m at without them. Since joining Get a Grip a year ago I have done 10 times more than I thought I could. 3 Spartans (with the last one timed at 59 minutes), RUNNING (which I always said I hated but now I love), Cardio Cave (LOVE LOVE LOVE Cardio Cave) and a Mud Obstacle Run! I can’t believe how much I’ve done in under a year.   The fact that I love to run now is all due to Carrie and Get a Grip. I would not have the stamina or endurance to finish my runs without the amazing training/support that Carrie provides!

I have one (or more) 5k’s scheduled each month this year with my goal of 2 half marathons in November! I can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store for all the amazing people at Get a Grip Fitness!

Lana came to Get a Grip a year ago as a guest with Sherri Lennon. She was very quiet and I was a little hesitate that she would stay. I should have known better if Sherri was involved:) All’s I can say is WOW! She has come SO far on her fitness level and Body composition. I had to laugh on her last goal sheet, she wanted to drop 2 jean sizes!!!!! FYI – she doesn’t have anything else to lose.  I had to break it to her, that there would be nothing left of her and she just laughed. I think she gets it now. On a serious note, she was very motivated and has done a HUGE transformation inside and out…SO Proud of her!

Here is Lana’s Story…

My story began when I got on the scale and I weighed as much as I did when I was pregnant. I was active playing softball for years but, when I stopped and continued to eat the same with no activity gradually I gained weight. I wasn’t happy with myself and with the weight gain so, I just bought my pants larger.  Sherri invited me to GAG to see if this is something that I would be interested in. I was hooked from the first day. Carrie is a motivator and encourages you that anything can be achieved that you put your mind to. I started with the 21 day muffin top contest and then the hot for holidays which helped me to eat healthy and exercise. Throughout the contests starting in September I have lost 24 pounds. I did my first 5k on February 2nd in 30:04 and it was very rewarding. I’m not a runner so, my challenge is to increase my time and build up my endurance. I have done the Spartan 1000 3 times and am going to do my 4th one on February 22nd. The Cardio Cave was a great addition to boot camp for me and I really like the intense cardio workout. I’ve been a GAG member for a year now and I look forward to boot camp and the next challenge.

Thanks Carrie for giving me the confidence in myself!

Did I mention I love the spotlights? There is nothing better than people feeling better and happy in their life! Marci is no exception. She gives every workout 200% and has fun doing it! Being a mom, wife, and working full-time; she still finds time for her. She could use all the excuses of no time, too tired, and etc. BUT instead she goes and just does it. A happy wife and mom makes a happy home, period. Everyone wants her legs and shoulders. I’m SO proud of her and feel Get a Grip wouldn’t be the same without her.

Here is her story…

Did I mention I love these spotlights? Watching people feel better and better about them over time is the best reward to me in life. Marci is no exception. She works at a level of 200% in every workout and actually has fun doing it. Everyone wants her legs and shoulders. I’m so proud of her making the time for herself. A happy mom and wife makes for a happy home. It is so easy to be too tired, make excuses you have too much to do, and etc. but she is proof you can do and have it all.

There are certain stages in life that bring upon us new promise as well as great challenges. I would classify motherhood as one of those stages.

My story is very similar to many women my age which begins with “I never had a problem with my weight before age 25”. I could eat all of the wonderful, tasty, delicious treats that we take for granted when we are young. I indulged in McDonalds hamburgers and fries with the addition of a supersize every weekend as well as going out for dinner and drinks almost every night. I remember in college stopping at the library snack bar on the way to class every day to get my large grab bag of BBQ Fritos and a Cherry Coke, not thinking twice about the amount of calories and fat I was consuming……I sure do miss that freedom.

My life has changed quite a bit since those care -free days of eat and drink what I want, and throw caution to the wind. I am now a VERY proud mother of 2 and work full time. I am constantly on the go and find it hard to balance time between everything life entails. I used to use this very way of thinking as my crutch for reason not to eat well or pull off a weekly workout.

marci before Spotlight Sunday...Marci Burden. Reminds Us Moms can Do it All!

It all changed for me one day when I was out with girlfriends for dinner. One of the friends had had her 2nd child around the same time I did. Her and I had talked while we were pregnant about how after this baby we were going to “get it back” again. Here I was 6 months after Tanner was born and still trying to figure out how to get it back. My friend had mentioned that she was going to start a boot camp with her sister and wanted to know if any of us would be interested. I scoffed at the idea. I think I even told her she was crazy to even try such a thing!

About 2 weeks after our girls night dinner I saw Jen on the playground with the kids and she looked great. I couldn’t get over the fact that she had only started boot camp a short time ago and already could tell a difference in her overall appearance. That was enough for me to make the decision to GET OFF MY ASS and do something about my promise to myself to “get it back”.

I remember showing up to my first class thinking that this was either going to go well or I would crash and burn to never be seen again! Luckily for me, I came on a night that was fairly manageable and did not cause me to fall to the ground of a heart attack. I was sold! I knew this was going to be my answer. Carrie was so encouraging, the people in my class were awesome, I had a gym buddy, and it got me out of the house. Woo hoo!!!!

I have now been a Get A Grip member for a year and I LOVE it!!! I have my “7:00 back corner” friends that make me want to come to the gym and push me to work harder every time that I am there. I have completely transformed my body, dropped 2 sizes, lost 18 pounds (not that I am counting), and developed muscle in places that I did not even know had muscle in them. I am in better shape today then I have ever been and I feel fantastic!!!!!!!! A big thank you to my “back corner family” and Carrie. This has been a rockin journey!
